- A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in the
Pendleton High School auditorium for Michael Lee "Fuzzy" Selves, who
died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon at age 53. Mr. Selves
was born Sept. 16, 1947, in Hillsboro, and was raised in Pendleton. He
graduated from Pendleton High School and received, while serving in the
U.S. Army, a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and a
master's degree from the University of Michigan. He served in the army for
20 years, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1989.
After his military retirement, he returned to the army as a civilian and was
promoted in 1996 to director of the Information Support Center for the
Secretary of the Army. He was awarded the new Defense of Freedom
Medal after the Sept. 11 attack. In 1995, he married Gayle Clarke.
Survivors include his wife; stepdaughter, Cara Clarke; stepson, Garth
Clarke; parents, Jack and Florence; and sister, Karen Hart.
