GURR: Vera Marguerite Gurr peacefully passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 89 years. Vera was born April 10, 1919 on, the Hazlewood homestead near Crandall, MB to Ed and Laura Hazlewood. Vera attended school in Crandall.
On Nov. 2, 1943, she married Bert Gurr and they set up their farming operation in the Hamiota area. Vera kept very busy with raising their three children and working on the farm. Vera had a love for music and spent countless hours helping and encouraging her family with music lessons and homework. She was an amazing cook and school lunches were not just thrown together, but packed with love. She was an active member of the Hamiota Pentecostal Church where she taught Sunday school and was involved in the church's Women's Ministries.
In 1973. Bert and Vera moved to Brandon. They purchased the King Koin Laundry and operated the business until June 2000. Throughout their 27 years of business, Vera spent endless hours dry cleaning and ironing. Brandon Calvary Temple was Bert and Vera's home church. Many Sundays they conducted services in numerous surrounding churches and care facilities. Vera assisted Bert by playing the piano for many of the services and they often sang duets. For their dedication, they received formal recognition in the form of a plaque from Calvary Temple for "Sixteen Years of Devoted Service". Vera particularly enjoyed attending monthly seniors luncheons and activities at the church. She was an avid reader, loved doing crossword puzzles, playing Crokinole and Scrabble. In the summer, Vera spent many enjoyable hours looking after the garden and flowers. She had a special place in her heart for family and friends who were always made welcome in her home.
