      January 1, 1930 - May 3, 2012

SHIER: Clarence Gerald passed away, May 3, 2012, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, after a short illness.

Gerald was born Jan. 1, 1930 at home on the farm north of Crandall, MB. He attended school in Crandall, not quite finishing Grade 11. He was a born farmer and worked hard there from an early age - stating that he had driven a "stook" team during threshing at the age of 11, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:OO p.m.

After marrying he took over the mixed farm from his father, specializing in dairy cattle for about 10 years until 1973 and continued with beef cattle until 1982, then just grain farmed until 1992 when he rented the land, eventually selling the farm in the mid 2000. He loved dogs, his favourite being his last a blue heeler named Oscar. He spent one winter, 1950-1951 at Wawa, ON at the mine. Gerald was a very community-minded person - he helped buils two rinks and worked at times upgrading the Community Hall. He served on the Crandall School and Pool Elevator Boards in the 60's, and then was a member of the Birdtail School Division for nine years until 1980. During that time he was also the secretary of the Manco Creamery and Cheese Plant at Rossburn 1970-1974 and he was in the Miniota Municipal Council, 1980-2002. When the Upper Assiniboine Conservation District was formed in 1996 he was one of the original board members and was still serving on this board and made many lasting friendships during these years. Gerald enjoyed sports, playing baseball, hockey and curling. He also umpired baseball and refereed hockey. He enjoyed hunting with the guys.

Gerald and his wife spent many years after 1980 camping and fishing - he was renowned for his filleting and cooking skills. Gerald was predeceased by his sons Vincent and Gordon, brother Barry, father and mother Clarence and Helen Shier, father and mother-in-law Gordon and Lois Vickery, and sister and brother-in-law Sheila and Frank Theide.

Left to mourn are his wife of 60 years Lenora (Lois), daughter Elayna (Michael) Zadko, daughter-in-law Mary Shier and grandchildren Veronica, Whitney and Gordon; also two step grandchildren Tiffany and Michael Zadko and great grandchildren Caydence and Cole; sister Beverley (Philip) Barteaux, sister-in-law Pat Shier, aunts Sally Parker and Irene Parker, several cousins, sister-in-law Evelyn (Richard) Hills, brothers-in-law Gerald (Roberta) Vickery, Doug Vickery and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held at the Hamiota District Sports Complex on Wednesday, May 9. A private burial of the cremated remains took place at the Crandall Cemetery prior to the service.
